Matt Ryan has a record he’d love to give away if he could. Unfortunately, it appears giveaways are his speciality in the redzone. He has more redzone picks than any other QB, with four on the year.
Ryan was just picked again today, as the Atlanta Falcons take on the Minnesota Vikings. A touchdown had been called back a handful of plays earlier, but the Falcons were still in scoring position and knocking on the door. Drifting to his left to get away from the rush, Ryan tried to fire one in, only to see it turned over in the endzone.
The Falcons started this season as one of the hottest teams in the NFL. It was surprising on many levels, as they had a rookie head coach in Dan Quinn, but all of the talent just seemed to be clicking. Julio Jones and Matt Ryan were connecting constantly, putting up some of the best yards and TD stats in the league.
But turnovers like this have really held them back. The Falcons have regressed as the year has gone on. They’re now just 6-4, not really a team anyone fears, and they’re well behind the Carolina Panthers, who lead the division. The Panthers are still undefeated, and it’s hard to imagine that the Falcons were once also undefeated as the two battled for the top spot in the NFC South.
Here’s a video of the most recent pick. It’s pretty ugly and should never have been thrown. It’s clear Ryan was just rattled from the pass rush and trying too hard to make something happen.
